Özet

Photosynthetic microalgal cells are substantial sources of many beneficial metabolites with antioxidant properties. In this research, in order to determine the antioxidant capacity and the amounts of phenolic compounds, Spirogyra varians were collected from planktonic habitats of AtaköyDamLake (Tokat-Turkey). Antioxidant and radical scavenging activities of methanol extract of Spirogyra varians (MESV) were determined by various in vitro assays such as 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonicacid radicals(ABTSradical dot+), and reducing ability was determined by the Fe3+–Fe2+ transformation. Moreover, these activities were compared with synthetic and standard antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and trolox. The results showed that MESV had effective antioxidant capacity. Total phenolic compounds of methanol extract of S. varians were analysed by spectrophotometer and results were given as gallic acid equivalent.
