Microalgae products are consumed as health food by humans and highly demanded all over the world. In this research, Spirogyra ellipsospora were collected from Yeşilırmak River (Tokat-Turkey) benthic habitats. Algal samples isolated and cultured with microinjection methods and then incubated in climate cabin. The methanol extract of S. ellipsospora (MESE) was analysed for antioxidant capacity in different systems including ferric reducing power (FRAP), and cation radical scavenging (ABTS+) activity by spectrophotometer. Results were compared with standard antioxidant compounds as positive control. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of MESE was calculated as 21.68 for free radical scavenging activity. Reduction power activity of MESE was measured 67.3 mmol trolox equivalent per kg algal tissue. In addition, total phenolic compounds in MESE were determined as gallic acid equivalent.
