Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine the reasons of pre-service teachers in preferring secondary school mathematics teaching department, their expectations from the program, and their prior preferences after graduating from the department and investigate the re-preference of the program. The research consisted of 77 participants from the fourth grade of the secondary mathematics teacher-training department of a state university in the fall term of 2018-2019 educational year. The case study pattern from the qualitative research methods was used and open ended questionnaire as the data collection tool was applied. Data were analysed with the descriptive analysis among the data analysis methods. At the end of the research, it was found that the basic reasons of secondary school pre-service mathematics teachers in preferring the department were because of their scores in university entrance exam and their interests and love for mathematics. In the expectations related to the contributions of courses in the program to the education of pre-service teachers were the expectations for field knowledge, pedagogical field knowledge and profession. The pre-service teachers stated that they expected to be qualified teachers and reach a sufficient level in mathematics education. Most of the pre-service teachers claimed that they wanted to be teachers as the profession when they graduated from the program and if they had the chance to re-prefer, they would choose the same program again.
