In this study, the Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) values of 15 meteorology observation stations in the
Euphrates basin were calculated over a 12-month period, the frequencies of the drought classes were determined,
and the index values were subjected to runs analysis to determine the maximum and average drought characteristics
(drought duration and severity) in the basin and investigate the meteorological drought. In addition, by analyzing
autocorrelation of the RDI values, the trend analysis was applied by Mann Kendall (MK) and Modified Mann
Kendall (MMK) tests and increasing and decreasing trend values were mapped in the geographic information
system environment. Thus, the regions endangered in terms of drought in the basin were determined, regions with
severe drought were identified and contributed to effective water resources and drought management.
