Özet

The main purpose of this study is to reveal factors affecting airlines’ outsourcing decision in their ground handling activities from the perspective of the Transaction Cost Theory. The qualitative research method was adopted in the study. The research data were obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted with 13 managers actively involved in the outsourcing process of airlines' ground handling activities in Turkey. The obtained data were coded and descriptively analysed by the researchers who have the requisite field-specific knowledge to analyse the data. The Nvivo 11 program was used in the data analysis process. The factors affecting outsourcing decisions in airline ground handling services are grouped under four themes as ‘Reliability,’ ‘Transaction Requirements,’ ‘Organizational Factors,’ ‘Sector Dynamics,’ and ‘Managerial Factors’ based on the data obtained in the research. Playing an important role in the success of airlines, ground handling activities are integral to the basic activities of airlines. Therefore, making outsourcing decisions about ground handling activities is of great importance for airline organizations. In this respect, the study is expected to shed light on the process of making ground handling outsourcing decisions for airlines.
