Eğitim belirlenen amaçlar doğrultusunda bireyi yetiştirme süreci olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu süreçte kazanılan bilgi, beceri, tutum ve değerler, bireyin karakterini farklılıklaştırır. Karakteri gelişen, bilgi ve beceriler ile donatılan birey ise, toplumsal yapı üzerinde olumlu değişmeler meydana getirir. Bu durum ise, temel değerlerin öğrencilere kazandırılması ile mümkün olabilir. Temel değerlerin kazandırılması amacı; Türk Milli Eğitim Temel Kanunu ve ders programlarının amaçları incelendiğinde de açıkça görülür. Temel Kanunun başlangıcında millî eğitimin amaçları sayılırken ahlâkî, manevî değerleri benimseyen, beden, zihin, ahlâk, ruh ve duygu bakımından dengeli ve sağlıklı şekilde gelişmiş bir kişiliğe ve karaktere sahip kişiler yetiştirmekten bahsedilmektedir.
