Biofloc technology is an environmentally friendly and sustainable aquaculture practice that relies on converting organic and nitrogenous wastes into beneficial microbial biomass through natural biological processes. This approach provides multiple advantages, including maintaining water quality, reducing the need for water exchange, recycling nutrients inside the culture tanks, lowering feed costs, and promoting healthier fish growth. In recent years, biofloc systems have been increasingly adopted in high-density aquaculture operations where sustainability, cost efficiency, and environmental protection are essential goals. However, the success of these systems depends on accurate and continuous monitoring of several critical parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, and nitrite. Manual monitoring techniques are slow and labor-intensive and often fail to detect sudden and harmful fluctuations. Therefore, new technological approaches have become necessary. In recent years, the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) sensor networks, wireless communication protocols, cloud-based platforms, and machine learning (ML) algorithms has revolutionized the control and management of biofloc aquaculture systems. In this review, 32 studies retrieved from the Scopus database using the keywords “biofloc IoT” and “biofloc machine learning” were examined. The analysis revealed that IoT-assisted systems can increase the accuracy of water quality monitoring by approximately 20% compared to conventional methods. Wireless data transfer via Zigbee protocols reduced delays to less than 10 seconds, while advanced ML models such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks achieved 83% accuracy in predicting ammonia spikes. Nevertheless, several technical limitations such as sensor electrode corrosion, high energy consumption, and offshore deployment issues remain. Future work is expected to address these problems through the use of graphene-coated sensors, low-cost servers, 5G-supported IoT infrastructures, and blockchain-based data security mechanisms. In conclusion, the integration of IoT and artificial intelligence into biofloc systems represents an innovative approach that enhances productivity, reduces risks, and contributes significantly to the long-term sustainability of aquaculture.
