Herbal medicines obtained from medicinal plants have been used as an important source in the treatment of different diseases for centuries. These plants contain many trace elements and a wide range of phytochemical components necessary for human health. These trace elements play an active role in various biological processes such as cellular defense, energy metabolism, and gene regulation. Verbascum species, known as “Sığırkuyruğu” in Turkish traditional medicine, are used especially in the treatment of conditions such as skin diseases, respiratory disorders, and rheumatic pain. Verbascum oocarpum Murb., endemic to Eastern Anatolia, stands out with its antioxidant, antimicrobial activity and some enzymes (cholinesterase, tyrosinase, α-amylase and α-glucosidase) inhibition properties. The aim of this study is to perform quantitative analysis of B, Na, Al, Si, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo and Cd trace elements in the root and stem parts of Verbascum oocarpum Murb. Plants collected in Erzincan between May and July 2024 were separated into root and stem parts and dried. 200 mg of these parts were weighed. 8 mL of HNO3 and 2 mL of H2O2 solutions were added to the samples and subjected to microwave-induced degradation in the teflon cups. Finally, samples were analyzed by validated ICP-MS method. According to the analysis results, all trace elements B, Na, Al, Si, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Se were detected in root and stem parts. Cd and Mo, although in low amounts, were detected only in the stem part. On the other hand, while Fe (7260.83 μg/g dry weight (dw)), Na (3694.5 μg/g dw) and Al (1177.0 μg/g dw) were the most abundant elements in the stem part, those most accumulated in the root part were Na (1010.2 μg/g dw) and Fe (722.0 μg/g dw). Additionally, Se and Co elements were detected in the least amounts in both parts except Mo and Cd. Although the findings show that the plant is a rich source of nutrients in Na and Fe, high concentrations of these two trace elements can have a toxic effect on the development and growth of the plant. These results suggest that trace elements of Verbascum oocarpum Murb. should be taken into consideration in future medical and agricultural research.
