The aim of this study was to consider an environmentally friendly medium for diatoms culture, formulated with wastewater sludge's isolated from Tokat Sewage Treatment Plant (DS, LS) and with the f/2 and DM used as control. Two diatom species (Navicula cryptocephala, Synedra ulna) were collected and isolated from planktonic habitats of Behzat Stream (Tokat-Turkey) and were grown with these four media in plastic test tubes. These four different culture media were added equally to the water samples and then those mixes were serially diluted to determine the most suitable concentration for diatoms growth rate. Cell densities in various concentrations were counted with thoma chamber on light microscope for 10 days. Our results showed that sewage sludge media increased diatom cultivation. By using them for diatom cultivation for the first time, we have opened a new scope for their usage. Due to its environmentally friendliness and cost effectiveness, sewage sludge can be preferred for diatom cultivation.
