This study aims to reveal traces of intertextuality in the English translation of Turkish author Bilge Karasu’s Troya’da Ölüm Vardı [Death in Troy] by Aron Aji. The book, originally published by Forum Yayınları in 1963, shows various indicators of Karasu’s distinctive authorial style and literary approach to ordinary stories of familiar characters, whose lives are enlivened through their inner selves and imaginary worlds. The translation, published in 2002 by City Lights Books, San Francisco, builds genuine narrative lines and presents a remarkable range of characters by reflecting upon cultural and historical material from the source text in a similar manner. This study comprises of three parts. In the first part, Bilge Karasu’s authorial style is analyzed with regards to his literary experiences as a writer and his critical stance towards language use as a scholar of philosophy. The second part is an extended account of literary themes and novelistic characters in the original book, Troya’da Ölüm Vardı while the third part comprises assessment of English translator Aron Aji’s translatorial decisions in the context of intertextual elements forming the basis of an intercultural reading experience linked to both source and target cultures. In conclusion, it has been observed that the translator achieved to create original grounds of literary perception and reception for the target reader in the process of translating the novel into English.
