Schlink’in 2021 yılında yayımlanan “Die Enkelin” (Torun) adlı eseri Almanya’nın
bölünmüş tarihinin Roman karakterleri üzerindeki etkilerini ele alır. Romanın
başkahramanı entelektüel bir adam olan Kaspar’dır. Kaspar, eşinin vefatından
sonra onun mektup ve günlüklerini bulur ve yıllar önce Doğu Almanya’dan Batı’ya
kaçmış olan eşinin arkasında bir kız çocuğu bıraktığını öğrenir. Yazar,
Kaspar’ın eşinin geçmişine dair bu gizemi çözümlerken karşılaştığı torunu ile
aralarındaki kuşak çatışmasını yalın ve etkili bir dille ortaya koymuştur.
Eserde kullanılan mektup ve günlükler sayesinde çok katmanlı bir anlatımla
okurla buluşan bu eser, Alman toplumuna ayna tutan güçlü bir yapıttır.
Çalışmamızın
amacı, söz konusu olay örgüsünde ortaya çıkan kimlik arayışı ile geçmişiyle
yüzleşme temalarını sosyolojik yöntem yardımıyla analiz etmektir. Nitekim bu
yüzleşme bireysel alanın dışına çıkmış olup, toplumsal ve kültürel düzeyde de
zorlayıcı bir süreç haline gelmiştir. Almanya’nın kolektif hafızasında bir
yüzleşme girişimi olarak okunabilecek bu eserin Alman edebiyatında son
zamanlarda sıkça ele alınan bireysel kimlik arayışı, kuşak çatışması ve Almanya’nın
geçmişiyle hesaplaşması konularını etkili bir biçimde yansıttığı
görülmüştür.
Bernhard Schlink’s 2021 novel Die Enkelin (The Granddaughter) explores the impact of Germany’s divided history on its characters. The protagonist of the novel is Kaspar, an intellectual man who, after the death of his wife, discovers her letters and diaries. Through these documents, he learns that his wife, who had fled from East Germany to the West years ago, left behind a daughter. As Kaspar unravels this hidden part of his wife's past, he meets her granddaughter, and the generational conflict between them is portrayed by the author in a clear and compelling manner.
Through the use of letters and diaries, Schlink constructs a multi-layered narrative that offers readers a deep reflection of German society. The aim of this study is to analyze the themes of identity search and confrontation with the past that emerge in the plot, using a sociological approach. Indeed, this confrontation extends beyond the personal realm and becomes a challenging process on both social and cultural levels. The novel can be interpreted as an attempt to grapple with Germany’s collective memory, and it effectively mirrors prominent themes in contemporary German literature—such as the search for individual identity, generational conflict, and reckoning with the nation’s past.
