Özet

The concept of cultural heritage covers not only national histories but also world history since both concepts are inextricably intertwined. It includes both tangible (e.g. buildings, monuments, landscapes, books) and intangible (e.g. riddles, traditions, folklore) cultural products. This paper, which serves to introduce the project entitled “Translation of Tourism Texts: A Case Study of Istanbul” carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mine Yazıcı and Prof. Dr. Alev Bulut at the Translation Department of Istanbul University, Turkey, deals with three tangible artefacts located in the Historic Peninsula of Istanbul and their introductory texts – termed as cultural heritage texts – both in English and Turkish. It aims to shed light on the ever-increasing role of translation in disseminating cultural heritage by drawing on the discussions regarding the concept of functionality.
