Özet:
The studies on nationalism typically highlight the effective and functional role of
the ideological apparatus of the state and conceives the construction of nationalism as
an intervention of politics from above. Nevertheless, such evaluations could not fully
explain how “ordinary people” embrace nationalism passionately, attributing a passive
position to masses.
This dissertation by no means denies the significance of the state’s ideological
apparatus. However, it also asserts that nationalism is not only a process that mereley
develops as a political construction, but it is also a process that develops through
material relations of production. By this way the thesis aims to understand and explain
nationalism through an analysis of the role that state plays in relations of production. It
focuses on the construction of the relations of production in order to grasp the
emergence of the sentiment of allegiance and subservience to the state, an element
which is at the core of nationalist ideas.
The research substantiates these arguments through a fieldwork carried out in
Rize as well as an archival research where it is found that relations of production in
Rize’s tea farming and industry and the role of the state in this relations of production
has played a constitutive role for the consolodiation of the allegiance to the state and
popularization of nationalist sentiments in this city.
