Abstract

To understand the behavior of geocells under tensile stress conditions in geosynthetic reinforced retaining

walls, it is necessary to know the geocell-soil interfacial properties. A series of large-scale direct shear tests

were performed to investigate the effect of soil grain size on the interfacial properties of geocell-reinforced

granular soils. The variable parameters included poorly graded sand samples with different mean particle sizes

(0.21 mm, 0.50 mm, 0.78 mm, 1.25 mm and 3.10 mm) and different normal stresses (55, 110 and 220 kPa).

To compare the reinforced strength of the shear plane, the sliding properties actuated in the slip plane, including

friction angle and apparent cohesion, were evaluated in the unreinforced and geocell-reinforced cases. The

results showed that the shear strength properties of the interface improved due to the presence of the geocell.

The shear strength at the geocell-soil interface was enhanced by increasing the mean particle sizes.
